Intaglio (in-tal-e-o) printmaking is one of the oldest and most respected artistic techniques in the history of printmaking, dating back to medieval times. This ancient method involves creating an image by incising or etching lines into a hard surface, which are then filled with ink and transferred onto paper. The word "intaglio" comes from the Italian term meaning "to cut into."
This workshop, taught by artist and instructor Alison Willard, explores intaglio printmaking using tetrapak cartons—the aluminum and plastic composite material used in juice and milk packaging. This sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional copper plates makes intaglio printmaking accessible to artists while promoting environmental consciousness. By repurposing discarded materials, we learn that artistic processes can be adapted creatively and responsibly.
Recommended Prerequisites: Drawing skills- line making, hatching, cross hatching, understanding of how to create value with a variety of marks. Sketchbook practice.
